Message from The Right Honourable Chief Minister of Penang
Tuan Lim Guan Eng
I wish to welcome “GerMANY FACES Malaysia 2009” to Penang initiated by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Malaysia. This is the second time such an event has been held in Malaysia after a successful run in Kuching in April this year. This event is targeted towards the general public and students of USM in Penang to give them the opportunity to experience a full spectrum of what Germany has to offer.
The Penang state government hopes to establish a people-oriented government where we can fulfill the vision of transforming Penang into an International City that is a location of choice for investors, a destination of choice for tourists and a habitat of choice for those who desire sustainable living. Germany’s success as an economic powerhouse, a center of educational learning and technological excellence and an environmental icon, a leading cultural and arts hub, gives us a good model to emulate.
A Penang people’s government is one that is built upon 3E principles. Firstly, ENABLING the people with education skills and opportunities are necessary to succeed in this competitive market. The second is EMPOWERING the people with freedom, rights and responsibilities to enjoy equal opportunities and equal treatment, with full observance of the rule of law. Thirdly, ENRICHING the people to improve the quality of life and share the fruits of economic success.
This event complements all the three key strategies in helping to transform Penang into an International City. The general public will have the opportunity to experience a full array of German technologies and know-how in the industry from different areas such as business, science, politics, culture and education. This event also provides Universiti Sains Malaysia lecturers an opportunity to work closely with representatives of different German companies in developing specific fields of studies to complement the current work of the USM students. From this experience, USM lecturers and students will then have a perfect foundation for them to further their training in Germany, known for its advanced management systems.
I hope that the organizers will consider making this project into a permanent annual event. I wish to thank the organizers for making all the necessary efforts to link the State of Penang to this wonderful project and I wish “GerMANY FACES Malaysia 2009” every success.
Thank you.
Lim Guan Eng
